Chameleon Cloak is a variation of the common Invisibility spell. Rather than bestow total invisibility, the Chameleon Cloak causes a person, their clothing, and possessions to take on the coloration and texture of their surrounding environment.
Like Invisibility, there is a Circle two spell that can be cast on individuals and a third Circle variant that can be cast on small groups.
It's less powerful than true invisibility, but the spell lasts much longer per casting than an equivalent invisibility, so a caster can keep the camouflage going for much longer without burning out her quintessence pool.
It also creates a smaller magical aura against basic magical divination, so it's easier to avoid detection from an observer actively on guard against invisibility spells.
Spells that pierce or dispel invisibility will still pierce or dispel a Chameleon Cloak.
Manifestation
The spell breaks up the outline of a person, especially at long distances. At close ranges it's stealth abilities are limited.
Discovery
Brigid the sorceress developed this spell because she and her adventuring companions went on long journeys into enemy territory trying to avoid Swynfaredian Dragonbloods, a group of people well accustomed to invisibility spells.
More often than not, Brigid casts the spell in conjunction with her ally casting Overland Flight on the party so they are less obvious flying through the sky. An odd ripple in the clouds is less inherently suspicious than an odd ripple in the land.
Brigid believes she is the first to invent this spell but this spell was independently created in East Colassia long before she was born. A Mereshnari rune caster created a very similar spell that she called "Mirage Cloak" during the Great Colassia War. Conveniently, if a person or group is spotted while under the effect of this spell, it's easy to write it off as a heat shimmer.
The spell has circulated to many mages among the Mereshnari and their closest allies, but the spell has yet to spread among mages that don't frequent the Great Colassian Desert, so it remains a rare spell
