cocatrices
Cocaktatries, reptile/rooster hybrids are one of the most dangerous monsters to debut in the Third Age. Cockatrices look like very large roosters with a reptilian tail and bat-like wings. While, not very strong or tough, their peck can turn mortals to stone. About four fifths of cockatrices are roosters. Hens have the same baseline stats and powers, they just lack the wattles and comb. It is uncommon to see solitary cockatrices. If you see one, there are usually five to a dozen other cockatrices nearby.
Cockatrices are not predatory towards mortal humanoids but they are very territorial very paranoid and will defend themselves from the slightest provocation, often flying directly towards humanoid’s faces.
Theories point to Greymoria, Korus , and Nami as potential divine creators for the Cockatrices. Blame has also been given to an agriculture hating druid or crazy mortal transmuter. Some speculate that they were created by a Demon with a sense of humor.
A dead cockatrice does not have the ability to petrify anything, but the bodies of cockatrices have some magical uses. The eggs are very valuable often selling for 100 gold piecess each to the right reagents dealer. Some adventurers skilled with bows often wear cockatrice feathers as a form of status and advertising.
Attempts to safely raise cockatrices have all been abysmal failures as cockatrices are essentially impossible to train or tame. Most authority figures, nobles, guild leaders, and priests alike simply want to exterminate cockatrices outright. It’s not uncommon to see bounties offered for cockatrices.
