Chapter 1: New Body, New World

So beautiful. 42.65 meters of total lenght, 117,451.27 kilograms of weight, 123.4 meters wingspan... Truly a perfect specimen...

"Doctor Kanesh-!"

These lab assistants, don't they know the importance of admiring your work? "Yes, rookie?"

"Everything is ready for the neural transfer doctor, shall we-"

"Yes!" A grin crosses my face from side to side. "Begin experiment number 18 on the neural transfer between animals and sentient beings!"

As the rookie pulls the lever, the lights in the room flicker, the fluid in the tanks shifts, and the 4 corners of my mouth couldn't be more stretched. As the beast screeches, the lights flash, tragically forcing me to close all 4 of my eyes during the beautiful process.

The smile fades from my face. "And?" I approach the tank and knock. "Another failure? How are the vitals?"

"They're both dead, doctor."

I put a hand to my face. "Ah, so the transfer worked, but they died shortly after? Perhaps, the minds and body of the Earthlings simply can't compare to such... majestic beings... We'll try we a simpler beast next time. How about those many legged ones, with the sharp tail? Yes, yes, definitely... Discard the corpse of the human, send the other one back to the General, wouldn't want him knowing of these experiments."

"But doctor, we have no idea if the transfer did work, so why do you-"

Warmth surrounds my hand as it passes through the rookie's face. "Incinerate him and strike him off the records. Such an insolent vermin won't be missed anyways." I pull back my hand and stare at it as the body thuds to the ground. The purple blood stretches from the middle of my forearm to the tip of all four of my claws. Blood... Might as well give it a try. "Prepare the next subjects and teleport these corpses away already!" A lever is pulled as the other rookies scramble to follow my orders. Why's it so hard to find competent Takhans in today's day and age? To think I share genomes with these imbeciles...

Urgh, where am I? It's so bright... Didn't the Takhans take me? This doesn't look like one of their dens... Are those... humans? I saw some on the Takhan ships, so maybe I am still on one after all? The floors weren't this soft, though. I look around and notice that I'm not on a floor but on a... soft rock? There's many light next to me and I have a needle stuck in my arm. Wait. Arm? This is... not my body? I remember being submerged in some liquid... Did the Takhans do this to me? Am I... human? This needle itches... I need to remove it...

Soon after I do that, many humans covered in white cloth appear. "Woah, woah, calm down! It's just an IV! A girl found you passed out on a grass field, you could've been poisoned by some monster so we can't let you leave yet. Sedate her!" As they hold me down, another needle punctures my skin and I pass out.

"Oh, you're awake!" They put that IV thing back into my arm... And who's this human greeting me? Her hair is golden and her skin is quite paler than mine. Her eyes are so... blue... "Hi I'm Adelheid I'm the girl who found you who are you???" The girl speaks without pause. "Uh?"

"Oh, do you not remember your name? That's okay I can give you one if you don't mind! Do you mind?"

"I... guess not?"

The girl jumps up and down excitedly. "Okay okay okay your name is Vivienne from now on then, I assume you have no place to stay so why don't you sleep at my house? Since you were found outside I assume you were a hunter just like me and- Oh! Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself am I not?"

"You're giving me a headache, that I know. But sure, it's not like I have any other options."

A smile appears on Adelheid's face as she goes back to rupturing my eardrums.

Weeks pass, and at this point I'm pretty confident I know more about Adelheid than her own parents. On the bright side I was able to pick up on many human words and expressions. I put on some clothes that Adelheid bought for me and head towards the exit of the hosptial, where she's waiting for me.

"Hi Viv! We'll get to my apartment by car since it's kinda far, ok?" I nod and get in the car. It feels way bigger from the inside than from the outside... Adele rolls down the windows and starts playing some music. She says it's Hazardous by Figurate Wyverns. As the wind rushes over my face, I start reminiscing of when I had my old body... Soaring the purple skies of my planet, watching the puny beasts fight for survival from above... Freedom...

The car suddenly comes to a halt. "Hey, could you put away your scales please? I'd rather the police doesn't get called on us." Uh? I look down at my arm and notice some scales very similar to my old ones have appeared.

"Oh, these, uh, no they're not scales they're-"

"The first time I found you, you were naked with scales covering half your body, slight horn stumps and a tail. You really don't need to lie, though I'd appreciate knowing the truth."

I look at her shocked. "So you knew I was a monster and didn't tell anyone? Why?"

Her gaze drifts to the sky as she begins to drool slightly. "You're hoooooooot."

"That's very bold of you. I too think you're attractive, compared to the women I saw."

Adelheid's face turns redder than my scales. "SO WHY DON'T YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOURSELF?!" Ah, a swift change of topic, a technique I've had to employ many times during my stay at the hospital. Well, if she knows, no reason to hide anything...

By the time we enter her apartment, I'm done with my story. Adelheid sits on a chair, places her elbows and the table and brings her hands to her head. "A wyvern."

"Yuh uh."

"And Earth is under attack by aliens sending down monsters for who knows what reason."

"Yup."

"And those aliens are advanced enough to effortlessly capture a wyvern."

"Bingo."

"We're fucked. We are so fucked."

"Well, maybe not. You see, if the Takhans were trying to put me in a human body or vice versa, there might've been a reason. Due to my stature I can now wield human weapons, which combined with my wyvern strenght could make me unstoppable. Hell, I'm even smarter as a human than I was as a wyvern, better in every aspect!"

Adelheid starts dozing off again. "Could you please stop lusting after me and think of a way for me to help against the monsters, thank you?"

She shakes her head. "Right! It's late now, so we should sleep, but tomorrow we can go to this city's hunter association and get you registered! They can probably get you your documents, too."

"Okay then, where's our bed?"

"...Our bed?"

"Yes. I was under the impression I was to be your mate in exchange for my secret remaining such, no?"

"Okay first of all that is not what I said! Second of all you'd be my girlfriend not my mate!"

"Ah? What's the difference?"

Adelheid brings a hand to her face. "I should've explained relationships and sex to you back at the hospital..."

"Well I don't mind being your girlfriend either, whatever that implies, as long as my secret is safe."

"You can't just suddenly be my girlfriend" We've known each other for barely weeks and you don't even know how relationships work, nor do you love me, you've been an animal for the past 22 years!"

I don't get it. Does she want me as a mate or not? "Teach me then? You've taught me plenty about this world already, what's one more thing?"

Adelheid blushes. "I- That's not- Whatever..."

Adelheid brings me to the bed and tucks herself in before closing her eyes. I start getting undressed before also getting under the bedsheets, as clothes have made it very hard to sleep the past few weeks. How do humans even bear to wear these? I get into bed and get ready to sleep as I stare intently at Adelheid's face. Why's she so poignant about me being her girlfriend and not her mate? Humans are so confusing. As her hand brushes against me, her eyes open again. "Are you naked?!"

"Yes? Clothes are a bother, and aren't we supposed to have sex, as you call it?"

"We met just weeks ago! Some people wait years to have sex! And you being naked is embarassing!"

"But you've already seen me naked, no?"

Adelheid quickly turns to face the other way. "Goodnight!" Guess I'll sleep too then.

I wake up next morning before Adelheid, get dressed, and grab sippy juice from a cabin. Ahhh, sippy juice, the greatest human invention... Adele enters the kitchen as well. "Ah, Adelheid, can we bring some sippy juice when we go out?"

"Sippy juice?"

I show her the sippy juice. "Sippy juice."

"That's a juice box."

"Sippy juice."

"Fine, I'll buy a thermos for your sippy juice."

"Will it be sippy? And will there be enough juice?"

"I'll get a deluxe one with a fucking straw!"

"Okie." I go back to sipping my juice.

After buying a thermos and enough sippy juice to make a grown woman cry, we head to the hunter's association.

"Hello, what may I assist you with?" A woman greets us at the reception.

"Hi, this is Vivienne and she needs some documents. She also wants to take the hunter exam."

"Birth date and full legal name?"

I look at Adele. She sighs. "Put down February 17th 2045 and... Vivienne Lanzinger."

"Okay, proceed to the room to your right for the exam, your documents will be given to you after."

As we head towards the room, I turn to Adelheid. "Lanzinger?"

"It's... my last name."

"Ah, yes, isn't that what mates do?"

"Shut up!"

Once we're in the next room, a tall man in a suit and tie welcomes us. "Hello! This is the room where you'll take your hunter exam. We will liberate some monsters and see how you fare against them. Have you brought any equipment?" I show him my thermos. "...We'll provide a spear then, but make sure to get your own equipment after! You'll be fighting three Cobontos, some weak F Rank monsters, just to see if you're good enough to start. Me and your friend will be heading to a room to observe you, after which you'll be able to begin."

I'm handed a spear soon before some doors open and the Cobontos enter the room. They look... oddly familiar. Ah! I remember seeing some of them while soaring above some plains of my home planet. Only three? Their packs used to be in the dozens! One of them starts charging at me, at which point I drop the spear I was handed and stop it grabbing it by the horn while still sipping my juice. The hard rock its made of starts to crumble under the pressure my fingers are able to apply. As I stare into its eyes, the whole trio begins to understand my true nature, or their instinct at least does. They begin rushing back to the doors they came from, scratching on them, begging to be let out as I slowly keep pulverizing their companion's horn.

"Okayyy! That's enough miss Lanzinger you definitely passed!"

"Uh? But I didn't kill them yet?"

"That's not needed, just let that one go please. You've passed with full marks!"

I let the Cobonto go as the doors open and they all escape. Adelheid rushes into the room, grabbing my hand and dragging me back to the reception as the man stares intently at me.

"Here's your documents, have a nice day, and congratulations on passing the hunter exam!" Adelheid snatches the documents, thanks the woman and drags me outside the building.

"Didn't you want to keep your secret?!"

"Ah? Are you humans not strong enough to crush a Cobonto's horn? They're surprisingly frail."

"I'm dating a pyschopath..."

"Ah, so we are mates!"

"Girlfriends! And sure, why not! At least it'll give me an excuse as to why I have to be your babysitter." She takes a deep breath. "Okay, now we're gonna set up your hunter account on this old phone of mine, so that we can form a party and be assigned to the same drop." Adelheid downloads the app on the phone, scans my documents, enters my info, then shows me how to set up a profile picture and a bio.

Not even 10 minutes after we're done setting up the account, we get a notification about a D Rank drop near the city outskirts. "Can we refill my sippy juice before we go?" Adelheid looks at me with disappointment before dragging me to her car and driving towards the city walls. Let's just hope these monsters will provide more of a challenge than Cobontos...
