Chapter 11 - The Next Day

Starlight reached out a delicate hand with sharp claws, saying, “Meet me, with the ember you have found, tonight, during moonlight point sky, at the Moonstone,”

Dawn agreed, eyes shining, and suddenly, she fell into a dark pit, where echoing voices as dark as shadows murmured in a chorus, “You fell for it… What do you think you’re doing?” And then in a sharp voice, “Dawn Starlight Lupus will never succeed!”

Dawn felt herself curl and writhe in her sheets, screaming in her sleep from the voices of all her betraying friends and a looming evil just on the edge, hovering like an awning over her future. “Nuh… no…” she felt her mouth saying until…

“Dawn! You’re back!” She heard a loud voice yelp in her ear. “Wait, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing Amber…” She rolled over on her side and groaned. She was still groggy from the events of the night before, all the celebrations, and Amber’s tantrum.

She thought back to her dream from earlier. Why were her friends of the past haunting her dreams? And more importantly, what message from Starlight were they hiding. Dawn suddenly blanched, realising she was getting used to calling the Moonstone Spirit by her maiden name! Why would she show disrespect to the spirit? It was actually pretty obvious to her how badly this would show on her sorcery record. But did she actually care? No. She would stick with whatever she thought as long as it lead her to the right path.

She felt confident, believing in herself until she remembered her lapse of judgment just the night before, where she let her immature teenage hormones take over and go wild on Amber in pure rage. She winced as her eyes studied Amber’s scab-ridden frame. Maybe it was best not t trust her instincts for a while yet, unless she was put on the spot for a decision.

She got dressed, and helped Amber put on something that would hide her healing scars, but would look normal and inconspicuous. While they were heading down to the dining hall, she felt herself revert to her original train of thought and ponder it for a while, until her stomach gave a loud rumble and the thoughts dispersed into tiny clouds of what they once were.

“Not now,” She murmured to herself softly and under her breath. “You are hungry right now, eat something.”

She grudgingly supplied the food to her stomach, though she despised the food on her plate that day. This was the fact as after any celebration on the LunarMoon Pack’s dimension, the food there was so good and pleasing that she found it hard to settle for the lousy human meal right after.

She helped herself to a hearty meal of eggs, and strips of bacon with round slices of roast ham. Amber gave her a strange look after she seemed to realise Dawn wasn’t speaking. Amber reached a hand out to her, and Dawn took it, glad someone could understand it, at least on some level.

After a while, everyone started staring, and Dawn pushed Amber’s hand away with heat in her cheeks. “I’m fine,” She muttered in Amber’s ears. “I just had a nasty shock in a nightmare that’s all, but I’m worried it might be a message from some sort of higher power of wolves.

Amber glanced at her in surprise, then hardened her gaze and said, “That’s all that had you worried? Seriously? I thought we were creating a bond here, and when I tried to chip in, this is what you do to me?”

Dawn closed her eyes, not expecting Amber to be this harsh, and doubled away for a few seconds. When she returned, Amber reached out her arm, her eyes softening and gently said, “I guess it was a horrible nightmare, wasn’t it?”

Dawn replied, still sniffling from the shock and sheer force of the night before’s happenings, “Yeah, yeah it really was.”

Dawn sat at the edge of her bed, still pondering what message Starlight was trying to convey to her. It was obvious the message was especially important and urgent for her to contact Dawn in a dream. A dream, of all places! She decided to conduct a Moon-seek ritual. But to get a straight answer without waiting for hours on end, you had to use another Moon werewolves ball of energy to blast you in.

She thought for a while, and finally decided to ask Merlina to send a small ball through the chain. Only the strongest Moon Werewolves can open the link during daytime, and only the celestial wolves.

She was technically a celestial, air, plant, and sea cross, but emphasis on the celestial kind, moon as she hadn’t unlocked any other elements yet. This had frustrated the eleven-year-old her, but she was no longer bothered by her.

She tapped into the chain, and winced from the number of unread messages she had in her mind:

5 a.m. Mellie: Dusk is totally mine! When I find him…

6 a.m. Dusk: Amber has a message for you! And umm… don’t tell Mellie where I am!

It went on like this for sometime, until she read through them all and was ready to send messages to Merlina, who could also read after daybreak. She internally chuckled at the number of messages she had received, that day’s dawn was much later than normal, causing the wolves to make the most of it.

After a short wait, she felt something buzz in her mind, and she opened the link to find Merlina’s message back, and a parcel which could solidify. She was so extremely pleased with the magic and nature of the wolves which allowed this to happen.

The message read, “Here, Dawn. I understand you are troubled and would like to consult. Go ahead! I’m sure the wolves aren’t doing anything.”

She carefully got her own ball ready in her right hand, and mentally directed the ball to her left. She felt her body squirm and shudder as it passed through, hating the unfamiliar magic. It wasn’t strange, it just wasn’t generated by her, and therefore she had to use her strong will to direct it out of her body.

She sighed as it exited her body, and fell suspended towards her left hand, which she quickly touched to the pulsating orb in her right.

Bang! Everything went out in a flash of light and Dawn swore she heard Amber screaming as she fell through the darkness and into the Lunar-sky grounds. Her thoughts drifted back to Amber outside her body, and she laughed a little, thinking about how Amber would be in astonishment watching her floating body. She was surprised, but not unrewarded as Starlight padded out into the shimmering clearing.

Starlight gave her a heavy gaze, and said, “Remember my message. Meet me with Amber tonight at the Moonstone, where you will learn a greater truth.”

She padded away, leaving Dawn mystified but slightly disappointed. Oh well, Dawn would bring Amber to find out this ‘greater truth’ that evening.

She warped back into her body, where she transformed back into her wolf just in time to land on her paws. Amber rushed over to her worried, asking, “Are you ok? What were you doing?”

Dawn gave her a slightly crooked grin, still feeling slightly dizzy and nauseous from the travel back to this simplistic dimension. While her mind swirled, Dawn replied, “I’m fine, totally fine. I was just travelling to the dimension of the greater Celestial Wolves, where the moon and stars are otherwise and where us sorcerers meet with them. You are coming with me tonight!”

Amber froze, and turned her head slowly towards Dawn, “What?”

Dawn told her calmly, “You are coming with me to the Moonstone tonight, it is part of the plan of the greater power.”
