Addition of a global nolink setting in image properties

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

In my world, I use images to create section dividers that offer more visual interest than a simple horizontal line. Since these run across the whole page, it's very easy to accidentally click on them, showing the image properties. I can set each individual image tag to have the "nolink" modifier to stop that, but I have to remember that every time I have a divider.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

If images had a toggle that could make them act as if they have nolink active by default, that would suppress the link for every time I use that divider.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Any other case where someone were to regularly use an image but doesn't want it to be a link.
Perhaps, if implemented, this should also give some kind of reminder to properly credit the image in the article. For my dividers, I have a global credit attributing my dividers to their creator with a link to their work, as is required by the license they're under, but crediting of images is something a lot of folks seem to let slide already, and not having the image be a link to its properties where such a credit can be given in detail without taking up page space might be detrimental to that effort.

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! We're accepting this for investigation. We won't add a toggle to the image settings, but we might allow using a hash "#" in the URL field of the image. When a URL is simply "#", clicking it doesn't do anything so it would address the usecase of decorative images.

I'd even prefer the tag to have the opposite behaviour... always a nolink by default unless you manually add [img|link] attribute. But i'm guessing a billion legacy tag references would be something of a drama :)

This would be great! I already add "nolink" to every image I use (decorative or illustrative or whatever) because all my work is credited elsewhere, so I don't ever want viewers going to the image properties page. This would be so much easier.

While this is doable with css, it's really nice to have a solution that's easier for people who aren't css wizards. A lot of people like to use images for decoration rather than illustration, and this would be an easier way to make them flow into the page. Plus it prevents readers accidentally leaving the page because they touched a divider image halfway through

Yes please! I want to use my manuscript's dividers in my articles as well, for more unity.
