What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, WorldAnvil allows users to add parental relationships (biological and adoptive) to character profiles, and these are stored as part of the individual records. These parent-child relationships are also accessible via APIs, enabling external tools like Brigid to display them in list form, providing users with a clear overview of these specific connections.   However, additional relationships (e.g., siblings, spouses, mentors, allies, rivals, etc.) do not have the same visibility. While these connections can be defined within character profiles, they are not included in the API data in Brigid or in the "Export World" functionality. This limitation means that users cannot easily view or work with a comprehensive list of all relationships across their world. The lack of centralized visibility for these relationships makes it challenging to analyze, reference, or manage them effectively, especially in larger or more complex worlds.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This feature request proposes adding functionality to either:
  • Include all defined relationships (beyond just parents) in the "Export World" data.
  • Create a dedicated page or tool within WorldAnvil to view all relationships in a centralized list.
  • By implementing one or both of these solutions, users would gain the ability to review, edit, and analyze their world’s relationships in a more holistic and accessible manner. A centralized relationship list would make it easier to identify connections between characters, ensure consistency, and streamline workflows for storytelling, worldbuilding, or game mechanics.   The result would be a smoother, more intuitive experience for creators working with character networks.

What are other uses for this feature request?

The proposed functionality would offer several additional benefits and applications, including:
  • Worldbuilding Analysis: A centralized relationship list would help users visually analyze the complexity and depth of character interactions, making it easier to identify gaps or redundancies in their narrative or worldbuilding.
  • Game Mechanics: Game masters and designers could use this feature to map out alliances, rivalries, or personal connections in tabletop RPGs or other games.
  • Collaborative Projects: In collaborative worlds, team members could more effectively coordinate shared characters and their relationships, reducing the risk of conflicting or overlooked connections.
  • Consistency Checking: Reviewing relationships at a glance allows users to ensure that their world remains consistent and avoids contradicting or forgotten relationships in their stories.
  • Improved API Integration: Tools like Brigid could fully leverage this expanded relationship data, providing creators with even greater flexibility in their workflows.
  • By addressing the current gap and expanding visibility for all relationships, this feature would significantly enhance the utility and user experience of WorldAnvil for storytellers, worldbuilders, and game creators alike.
