Even when deleted, they come back when I edit an article again, so it has to be manually done every time. Not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but I'd really like the option to do away with the whole thing.

While I like the icons for some worlds, for others they become...obstructive, to the world's theme. Having a global toggle option per world would save a lot of fuss and is the best of both.

It used to be very easy to not use icons, but the new editor automatically applies them. There should be a way to turn them off other than custom CSS or manually per article.
