Professions in Settlements

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

An option to list out the various professions in a settlement should be added.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Currently, only the profession template has an option that show where the profession is, but a way to show what professions are available in a settlement (from the settlement article) would make things seem cohesive and easier on the world builder.

What are other uses for this feature request?

In addition, this would let people scrolling through a world look at the specific jobs that can be done in the settlement, rather than going to the professions and searching for the settlement name.

The Team's Response

Hello Beans!   This suggestion did not reach any of its consideration thresholds but I had some comments/thoughts about it that we can discuss on #development-discussion on our Discord
  • Setting a location (or multiple locations) in the Profession template WILL show that profession on the Location's page.
  • If I was to establish a bi-directional input for this relation, I would have to do it for all of them. that would literally be almost 250 of new prompts that will make the number of prompts explode across the templates and making it really hard to navigate. So choices had to be made in terms of which is a master template and which is a subordinate template. (In the case of the question of "In which location you can find a profession" Profession is the master and location the subordinate.
  • I did find the point of ss2020 quite interesting. When you visit a city you probably want to know if you have a Blacksmith's store not a Blacksmith, I mean the store might have 3 of them and the profession doesn't really add so much, not as much as the actual Building/Business entry like "Dimi's Hammer & Murderhobo supplies". On that what we could do is to add "Related Professions" to the BUILDING template. So can, for example, say that Dimi's Hammer has Blacksmiths, Armorsmiths and Weaponsmiths.
  • The other interesting point was that in many cases what you want is a list of numerical and descriptive values like 3 Blacksmiths 10 Tailors 20 Sailors 250 Guards. This is really a but hard to standardise but I think also it's a thing that if developed can help not just this template, but templates in general. At this point we are talking about a new type of mini-table entity that will need its own feature suggestion. (and although hard, I will be really excited to implement)
  • I hope that the above make sense, I would love to hear your ideas so please do reach out on Discord to discuss.
