Bring Back The Guestbook Followers, and those we Follow

Fix-it Bug-fix guestbook community feature-request

For the past year, (if not more than that) the guestbook has been in a state that defeats the entire purpose of such a feature. The Guestbook itself was once a place on everyone's WA page where we could view our followers, and those we follow. For the past year, we have not been able to do so without combing through our notifications. This makes it very hard to support our followers, and those we follow. Consequentially, it makes it very hard to receive any support.

For a while now, the WorldAnvil crew has been focusing on trying to fix that which did not need fixing, and neglecting that which does. Don't get me wrong, as buy and large, the Worldnvil crew does an amazing job in running the site, and keeping it well within what we expect out of a community-driven writing/worldbuilding service. However, making it more difficult to access the community which you take pride in takes away from that selling point.

Follow up

Hey, I've been hearing about how my phrasing in this is "Needlessly aggressive" and would like to apologize, and explain myself. I never intended for aggression to be the forefront of this request, but rather honestly, and the fact of the matter. I am sorry for this. Also, another idea is maybe not a dedicated guestbook, as some seem to view the feature as it was as "Archaic" or outdated. I, and I am sure many others are open to some alternate version of basically the same feature. Ultimately, I just want to be able to easily support my followers and those I follow again. And again, I am sorry for the perceived aggression, and will be much more careful about my phrasing for things going forward.   As always, God bless, no stress, and may many epic days and peaceful nights lie ahead of you.
WE WON!!! We're getting back (at the very least) a way to view our followers and those we follow!

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! The list was removed purely for technical reasons (in short, the profile images in the guestbook were causing very long load times in profiles with a lot of followers). We'll bring back the list as text only (i.e. without avatars) and we'll look into optimizing user avatars in general in the future.

I am so offended by people who thought you were being aggressive. I'm sorry but frustration and venting about one isn't "being aggressive". In fact, those who thought you were can go away.   MagicMissleMedia, I am in agreement. I can't say more because I'm already in enough trouble but yeah. Ignore those who do say you're aggressive and everything will be fine.

You aren't being aggressive at all! There is nothing wrong with airing out frustrations and being critical of something, especially since your point was well made, and especially since it's been a year with nothing on this front.   Some people just like to call anything even slightly negative as aggressive, but that sort of toxic positivity (aka, good vibes at any cost) can be just as damaging to a community as toxic negativity. Just ignore them and move on.   Now going back to your original feature request, I am all for having the guestbook return to its former glory, or at a minimum have some sort of way to see who my followers are, because I honestly have no idea who my 99 followers are other than the 12 or so that interact with my community posts on a regular basis.

I'll support this fullheartedly because I feel like my reader engagement has dropped off a cliff with the incessant tampering with community features and visibility. I can't post jack without it getting flooded out by half a dozen other posts within a day and I know for a fact I have views but it seems like it's getting harder for new readers to engage with each other.

While I think the tasks the team have been working on have been very useful lately, this would be good to see added back in!

I'd imagine that this could be a quick fix and not take away for the other very useful things the team is doing.

Would love to find an easier way of interacting with Followers and Friends here. The Guestbook does seem a bit archaic. (Was it always meant to be?) I believe in the advancement of the Guestbook idea, but not the sentiment that this is the most important needed feature. Community is always needed, and WorldAnvil doesn't have an updated way to connect. Let's start a discussion on how to make interaction better. :)

Being able to easily see our own follower/follows information: Yes please.   Needless aggression: No thanks.

I was just combing through the statistics looking fit this too, I never knew it was an actual feature at one point.
