Familytree upgrade contenttrees content tree contenttree
What feature is missing/ unsatisfying?   In the current state, you can't tell apart a child object. If the father has a friend and a son and collects them under the father, there is no telling apart. Also, adding new people to the family tree is not possible. If the Father marries a Wife, she can't be added on the same level as the father, AND must be the child object from the grandfather or grandmother. There is no good way of displaying other than straight hierarchy from top to bottom. No real tree is possible.   How does this feature request address the current situation?   At the current state, no real trees are possible. I can't add something in the middle of the tree, like a wife, a spouse, or a secret lover, whatever you can imagine. Only straight top to bottom trees are possible; it's more like a waterfall chart.   What are other uses for this feature request?   As stated above, you could create a real interactive treelike structure where you can follow down NPC connections, family bloodlines, and when they grow into other families (marriage and so on).

The Team's Response

Hi! I recommend checking out the guide to family trees, which explains how to create a tree (including how to add spouses): https://www.worldanvil.com/learn/family-trees/family-trees-guide   That being said, we do plan on building a new relationships system, which will improve this feature module to make it more flexible.

It would be much more useful if we could depict half-siblings or other edge cases like that.

This would be best done with the relationships manager which doesn't seem to be connected to the family tree in any form. As of now, a husband and wife are linked in the family tree when a child has both of them declared as parents ; having a relationship declared between them too changes nothing to the family tree. For example, the wife will be labeled as "spouse" in the family tree even if she's declared "secret affair" in the relationship manager. In my view the "blood/kinship relations" should be only a simplification of "extended relationships".

Like AuraGuard said, spousal relationships and other forms are parentage are already included in family trees. There also plans for relationship webs in the future, which could include all types of relationships.

I've...never had this problem? Generally, you go into the edit character screen for the Wife (in this case) -> Relationships tab -> Add Relationship -> use the Relationship Type dropdown and select spouse. That'll update the family tree chart to recognize the Wife as a spouse.   Friends...aren't supposed to be showing up on family trees. It's just actual blood and adopted family, afaik, there's no friendship support yet. There's certainly some flaws with the current family tree system, but I think your issues come from a misunderstanding of how to use the system, rather than an issue inherent to the family tree structure on WA.   They are planning on improving it, though - it's just taking a while because it's an overhaul.
