Add members to a family without creating articles for them

New Feature Addition · Family trees · Created by Arlatius

Currently in order to build a family tree within articles, one needs to create parent articles and link them to their children. I'm working on a large clan family tree, but only a few key members are important enough to need articles written about them. Given that a descendent feature has already been rejected, in order to include the important characters (who are seven generations into the clan) i would need to create at least one parent per generation until I reach the top of the tree. This causes a huge amount of article bloat, for characters who are no more than a name.   I propose the ability to write in a character name without creating a new article for said character, possibly something like in the current residence field in a character article where you can optionally link the content of the field to an article or leave it as plaintext.

Thanks for the suggestion! This is a good idea and will come as part of a future relationships update.

I would love this option with all articles. I don't always want to write an article just to name a organizations leader in its article.

I’ve been dying to flesh out the royal family tree, but I’m not quite ready to add over 50 articles just for highkings not really relevant to the current day.

Yes please! I've been putting off building out the grand genealogy of one of my older families because I don't have a good system to build the family tree with. And I'm not creating articles for every single member...yet.

After I had created a small family tree of just 4 generations, I no longer wanted to use the family tree tool, for exactly this reason. At the moment I switch to Maps, where I prepare the family tree beforehand using image editing, which takes ages. And I have tested org trees, but they also reach their limits with generations with several lines existing at the same time, because everything is stretched out. It would really be so helpful if family trees could be created without articles.

There are alternatives such as org trees or leaving the extraneous articles drafts, but it would be nice to not need workarounds.

Yes, I have some lineages that go back a 100 years, and creating a full character is a waste of time. I would rather have a small image and their relevant dates.

I have a similar problem with an imperial bloodline in my main world, and I'd love to have a more elegant way of handling this.   However, I don't see an easy solution because the character information would still need to be stored somewhere. Implementing a second character storage alongside the articles would probably cause more trouble than it's worth.

I think this could be technically done with just the sidebar of the important characters, and skipping generations that don't matter (ala top tier, then 4 tiers down being the great great great grandson of X), but I would also like this feature.
