Allow Author/Owner to select a Subscriber Group when Viewing the World Homepage

User Interface (UI) / User Experience (UX) · Access management (subscribers/authors) · Created by RPGDinosaurBob

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

The "View World Homepage in Public Presentation Mode" allows a creator to see everything on their homepage, including every "subscriber only" section. The ability to select a single subscriber group to view as would let the author/creator have a much better view of how a world appears to "real" visitors.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

A button at the top of the World View that brings up a dropdown of subscriber groups to choose from cause the world to render as if the viewer were in that group. Having an "all groups" option in the dropdown would retain current functionality. The selection could be a single (radio button type) choice, or multiple choices could possibly be offered. Ultimately, allowing the owner/author to configure (via world settings) which subscriber groups should be selectable for this feature would be ideal.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This feature's main purpose is to make it easier for a creator that uses subscriber groups to control viewer experience to actually see what those viewers will see - without having to create a dummy account that belongs to a particular subscriber group.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! After some internal discussion (and recently discovering that this is not as impossible as we previously thought), we have decided to accept this suggestion. However, don't expect it anytime soon, as this depends on the new presentation/view mode layer being implemented, and that's also a bit far off into the future.

Like others have said, this has been rejected before and likely will again due to complexity and security concerns. However, impersonation is an incredibly helpful feature to handle restricted content, especially when adding in more nuanced features like userstates, secrets, and subcontainers. It's not just about which articles can someone see, but which parts and how.

I doubt this will be implemented and I don't mind using a secondary account to check stuff like that. ... I'd just wish it was easier to find out that we are allowed to do so? Maybe I'm blind, but the TOS state that you are only allowed one account and I found out on the discord by chance, that you are allowed to make a secondary account for testing stuff.

I had to create a dummy account as the support told me this was the only way to check how it worked. Which is complicated to use, as you need to log out and log in a lot, but it also give a false idea of number of users and the number of followers.   If it technically is problematic to implement this feature, could we not all get a dummy account for this use, that is flagged as such and cannot be used for anything outside your own worlds?

Yes please. This is partially the reason i dont have this on my world is i dont know how to do it and if i did incorporate it i would feel that i set something up incorrectly.

Whilst on the face it, this seems like a perfectly reasonable request, having a "mode" where one account imitates the security of other has all sorts of subtle problems, technically and functionally. Technically it is tricky to implement and could leave security holes if there were bugs. Functionally the proposed "subscriber mode view" for an author can never look exactly like the pages would look to a true subscriber since there has to be some way to switch back to the author mode, which the true subscriber wouldn't have. Whilst you might say this is only a minor difference it still means you aren't getting exactly the same experience as your subscriber. I think "best practice" here is to create another account with the rights you want and use that to view your site as the notes on the declined suggestion referenced by WeStanNikolai recommend. This is 100% going to give you the experience of your subscriber without any possibility that something in the suggested "emulation" mode is in fact a bug with the emulation.

This has been suggested twice before and the first time the team gave an extensive explanation as to why: https://www.worldanvil.com/community/voting/suggestion/524f8907-9954-491d-bc49-8c13e97b71ec/view   In short, this probably won't happen.
