comments social moderation

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

As much as we all love comments, the increasing number of scam comments are drawing more attention to our current lack of moderation options. Right now, our only options are all-or-nothing, such as disabling all comments or disabling all community features. These are important options, but our toolbox could use a few more tools.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

A moderation queue would give us a middle ground between posting all comments or none. Comments with high trust will get posted right away, while ones with low trust will go into our personal queue for review. We could configure various trust levels, such as:

  • Follower status. We might trust comments from followers more than non-followers.
  • Account age or activity. An account that's done more things for longer is more trustworthy.
  • Spam/scam rating. This would likely require some sort of automated detection.

Those who don't want to moderate comments could trust everything, while others could adjust the sliders to be stricter. The cherry on top would be if we could report suspicious comments directly from the queue, rather than leaving them public while the team reviews the Google Form report.

A lot of blogs and similar sites already do this, so I'm hopeful WA can benefit from work already done elsewhere. If a queue isn't feasible, then being able to disable comments for only specific groups (such as non-followers) would still be helpful.

What are other uses for this feature request?

I'm focused on articles because that's what I write most of, but the scambot comments started on Manuscripts. The same moderation tools would likely be helpful there, as well.
