Dictionary Widget for Other Articles to Make It Easier for Visitors to Translate Words

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Current Issues

  • Currently, as the writer, word translations have to be manually and individually included in-line or as tooltips on articles.
  • Users have to navigate to the actual language page to use the look up tool - which probably means most won't.
  • The shortcode (e.g. dictionary:33170) outputs the whole thing (240 words currently in this particular one!).

Possible Approaches

It would be helpful to have some form of "link" (in the loosest sense) between the dictionary and where words from that language are used. Possible approaches
  1. Add an option for a sidebar widget that embeds the same one that's on the language page itself (see Foyiitùn)
  2. Create a shortcode that embeds that widget wherever the shortcode is.
  3. Allow individual words to be short-coded in the way that terms/variables are. While you could argue all language items could also go into variables, double-inputting can be a lot of work and likely to be inconsistently maintained on one side or the other.
It does not need to be any more complicated than this.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By having a widget - either selectable or by shortcode - visitors can look up language words if they need to. Writers do not need to add as many in-text translations or tooltips, unless the situation requires it.

What are other uses for this feature request?

I think I'd prefer to say which existing feature could be used to build this one? - and that would be variables/terms.   But you could also use the widget to expand the variables system too where terms could be looked up that aren't in a language different to whatever the writer's main one is.   Thanks for listening.

Follow up

You're welcome - and thank you for taking the time to read and respond to it - I really appreciate you hearing me out.   (And a huge thank you to those who have voted/donated points!)

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! Back when the dictionary widget was implemented, an interactive embeddable widget was very hard to implemented, which is why the short code outputs a static list. But the technical limitations we had then aren't as severe now, so we've added it to the list to be done at some point in the future.   We also wanted to take some time to mention that this is a very well-constructed suggestion. We really appreciate it! :)
