They don't like to admit that they related to each other, but kalazotz and camazotz have the same origin. Both kalazotz and camazotz take pride in their flight abilities.
About one in three hundred births among both species are afflicted with the "Groundling's Curse", a condition where they are born with partially deformed wings.
Their wings are usually not purely useless, batfolk with the Groundling's Curse can still maintain crude gliding allowing for little more than slowing falls to a safe speed.
Treatment
A Zotz born with normal wings and seriously injured can be cured with powerful Healing theurgy, but there is no cure for those born with Groundling's Curse.
Their wings still have the metaphysical potential for flight. Long ago, half-dragons with vestigal wings have figured out that flight magic is enhanced when cast on them, and the same principle makes flying spells cast on groundling kalazotz last longer than they would on a purely flightless person like a human or an elf.
Cultural Reception
Camazotz treat their groundless kin with contempt and kalazotz treat their groundless kin with sympathy
Camazotz will not hesitate to comit infanticide on any pup that looks weak for any reason, not just for flawed wings. Very few camazotz with the Groundling's Curse make it to adulthood.
Nomadic kalazotz also put down their flightless pups, but they are more conflicted about it.
Kalazotz with established territories will normally let their flight-less kin live. Most non-nomadic kalazotz are dwarf influenced kalazotz dwelling in Meckelorn, Stahlheim, or the Barony of Bats. In these societies, groundling cursed kalazotz can pretty much pursue any vocation they want and receive the full support of their families and nations.
Groundling kalazotz are usually highly literate and frequently fall into a profession that requires a high degree of literacy such as alchemist, scribe, or wizard. The most common profession groundling kalazotz is being part of the clergy.
