Managing a House or Business

Managing a business or a lord’s retinue is pretty hard work. There are books to be balanced, workers to manage, resources to check, and customers or subjects to serve.   Managing a home or business requires an Intelligence + Seneschal roll every week. Running a small business like a cobbler’s shop is pretty routine in all but the most strenuous circumstances and requires a difficulty 4 roll. While managing one of a the kings main fortresses would be difficulty 7 under even ideal circumstances.   Finding appropriate staff requires a Perception + Empathy roll with a difficulty depending on the availability of suitable workers. One success will find someone adequate, three successes will find someone good and five successes will find someone who can be a true asset to the business or organization.   Retaining a staff (and keeping them honest) requires a Charisma + Leadership roll with difficulty and frequency of these rolls at the storyteller’s discretion. More complex business may require Perception + Seneschal rolls to monitor the books.   If your character has to deal with trade associations or guilds on a regular basis, they may have to roll Manipulation + Seneschal to make sure you get what you need when you need it and are not cheated. If you have to deal with the retinues of noble houses or the clergy of a temple you would need to make Intelligence + Politics rolls to avoid red tape.
