Ray attack spells
Most ray spells are part of the Arcane School of Conjuration, Fire Blast, Lightning Blast, and several other "_____ Blast" spells. And the Necromancy spell "Necrotic Ray".
A small number of ray attacks are theurgy, Fire ●●● and Weather ●●●●
Ray spells all work basically the same. The successes rolled on the casting determines base damage and you roll to hit with Dexterity + Archery or Dexterity + Athletics, whichever is higher. Assuming the ray hits, any extra successes above the minimum to hit are applied as bonus dice, just like when making an attack with a bow or crossbow.
The caster does not suffer a multi-action penalty or any other penalty for making this attack roll UNLESS the caster suffered a dice penalty on her casting roll in which case she suffers an identical penalty on her attack roll.
Ray spells have an effective range of 100 yards.
3 yards or less is "point blank range", -1 difficulty to hit.
3 to 50 yards is considered "normal range", no modifiers.
51-100 yards is considereed "long range, +1 difficulty to hit
Ranged Combat Modifiers all apply to ray attack spells (target is prone, target is behind cover, visibility is poor), etc.
Spell-casters can take a specialization in Athletics or Archery in "rays" to get a bonus die on attack rolls. This assumes spends some of her down time is spent doing target practice.
Avoiding Ray Attacks
Ray attacks can be dodged by an aware opponent just like an arrow or crossbow bolt can be dodged. This requires a Dexterity + Dodge roll per normal. A character with the shield proficiency bestows a +1 penalty on enemies hitting him with rays just like the penalty enemy archers have to hit him. Warriors can take a specialization in Dodge in "rays" to get a bonus on defensive rolls. This assumes the warrior has friends attack her with rays during training sessions.Base Damage chart for Blast Spells
