Platonic Firewood spell
Then, if I pulled this sword into the material plane, contact with the imperfect material world will make the Platonic Sword even less perfect. But it will still be a very powerful sword, better than even the best magical swords ever forged...at least for a while. Every minute in the material plane makes the Platonic Sword a little bit more imperfect. A legendary magic sword becomes an excellent magic sword becomes a good magic sword becomes a well-made non-magical sword becomes an adequate sword becomes a poor sword becomes a stick and then it becomes dust. Even at my advanced level, I'm lucky to have a Platonic Sword or Battleaxe last an hour. If I reinforce it with my will, I might be able to make a weapon last four hours. Platonic Firewood is different. The abstract concept of 'Firewood' is simpler than the abstract concept 'Sword', so it lasts a fair bit longer. And in the case of firewood, the fact that the wood doesn't last very long is not a big problem, since you are going to burn it anyway. Platonic Firewood burns hotter and cleaner than regular firewood. Unfortuantely, because Platonic constructs do not last very long, you can't stockpile Platonic Firewood. Every hour you wait to burn it, the wood gets a little bit damper and a little bit smokier. You have to learn how to walk before you learn how to run and this spell is probalby easiest Platonic spell to learn, so it's good a starting point. Even a novice Conjurer should be able to keep a party alive in freezing temperatures indefinitely.""The Astral Plane is both the birthplace and the final resting place of knowledge, ideas and concepts. Somewhere in the silvery mists of the Astral Plane lies the Platonic Ideals of all things. Mages can access these Platonic Ideals...at least partially. Even the most clear minded and intelligent mage cannot perfectly conceptualize a Platonic Ideal, but we can get pretty close. If I try to make the Platonic Ideal of the concept of 'Sword' into reality, the best I can do is make an imperfect copy of the Platonic Sword in the Astral Plane tainted by the imperfections of my mortal mind.
It's certainly convenient, but it's not required. Regular coal is satisfactory. Platonic Firewood means you don't need to ship in coal from abroad, but it does mean you have to negotiate with a mage, which is often more expensive than paying miners and trade carvans. Mages are often prideful individuals. Normally only the very best blacksmiths have the leverage to negotiate as equals. I hear Platonic Firewood aids with the creation of magic items, so that gives mages and master level smiths something to cooperate on. For isolated areas far from sources of coal, Platonic Firewood might the only option. In places like these, the smith guilds are firmly in the pocket of magical Conjurers"-Borsas Dragonbane, dwarf blacksmith"You don't need super hot fires if you are just cooking a pot of stew or heating a house, but you need really hot consistent fires to forge steel or shape glass. In the case of metalworking, you need metal, skilled smiths, and lots and lots of coal or charcoal. It's usually easier to move the metal and the metalworkers to the coal than it is to move the coal to the metalworkers. This is why the best blacksmith usually cluster near coal mines or large forests. My mentor arranged for me to practice a bit with Platonic Firewood, just so what I know what it's like.
Effect
The caster conjures about 20 pounds of Platonic Firewood per success rolled. For context, a soldier at a military camp in a temperate area typically consumed eight pounds of wood per day.
Platonic Firewood is equal to or slightly better than high grade coal or charcoal for about an hour. Then it's equal to common charcoal for aobut three hours. Then regular well-seasoned firewood for about four hours. Than damp smoky wood four about eight hours. Then it rapidly turns into ash then nothing.
If the caster "fortifies" a casting by spending a temporary Willpower point, the duration of every stage is lengthened by a factor of three.
Manifestation
Platonic Firewood, like most astral constructs, is normally gray colored. It's also smoother and more regular than most normal firewood, though it will get rougher and darker as it's "Platonic Perfection" begins to degrade.
Discovery
This spell was discovered or possibly rediscovered early in the the Third Age by either Jórtoca mages or ancestors of the Jórtoca. The Jórtoca live in cold climates up north and there is not always abundant firewood. Even today, almost every Jórtoca mage that stuidies Conjuration learns this spell early in his/her studies, just out of tradition.
Eventually this discovery spread south to other tribes. Down south, Platonic Firewood is not needed for survival from the cold, at least not to the same degree, but it's useful for blacksmith, glassblowers, and other workers who need consistent hot fires or any settlement that has limited access to firewood.
Why not make Platonic Food?
Sir Casmir, Grand Marshal of Fumaya "In a siege situation, Conjurers are very valuable wether you are the Sieger or the Besieged. In theory, a besieged group with a skilled Conjurer will never run out of fuel or ammunition or water, but they can easily run out of food. The short life of Platonic Firewood is not a problem because you are going to burn it. Why not make Platonic Food, it doesn't have to last very long if you eat it right away. I asked a learned court mage this very thing. Legends say the the ancient Fakhari could create food out of nothing but it is also said they could turn lead into gold and ressurrect the dead. Fanciful legends don't help anyone. Conjurers have been trying to magically synthesize food out of nothing for many centuries with no luck. Platonic Food tastes delicious but provides no nutritional value because it gradually degrades into an inedible poison. Even you eat it, will continue to degrade in the digestive tract after being eaten. The best case scenario is that Platonic Food will make the person sick and induce vomiting. The worst case scenario it will kill person who ate it. So we are stuck feeding armies without magic."
