Spell casting failures

In game terms, failed rolls are either "failures' or "botches." Botches are rare and they are catastropically bad. Magical botches vary considerably, but they are usually result in the the exact opposite of whatever the spell-caster wanted to do.   Failures tend to be fairly predictible and consistent. The effects are short lived but tend to be obvious.     Failed attempts at Conjuration casting tend to cause the caster to shoot non-damaging crackling orange and/or silver sparks out of her hands. This is the most obvious form of magical failure which is the reason "Spark Thrower" is a nickname for a weak mage in general, not just a weak Conjurer.     Failed attempts at Illusion castingtend to create a small bit of purple vapor with a sad sound nicknamed, "the purple fart".     Failed attempts at Enchantment casting tend to create a yellow flush in their target and the caster's face (regardless of whether the caster was the target). This is nicknamed "mystic egg on face".     Failed attempts at Necromancy casting do not commonly make a visual effect but they frequently conjure a smell of rotting wounds, even if the spell has nothing to do healing or undead. This is the nicknamed "the stench of failure".   A necromancer that has poor hygenie or has recently been grave robbing might be able to get away with the smell going unnoticed.     Failed attempts at Abjuration casting tend to make a ringing noise. This is the nicknamed the "toll of failure.". The toll of failure is less stigmatized than other forms of magical failure.   A successful Abjuration spell that comes into contact with another magical effect sometimes makes a similar ringing sound, especially for Counterspells or other dispeling effects.     Failed attempts at casting divine magic are less obvious. When divine magic fails nothing happens, and nothing embarassing happens either. It is sometimes joked that the Nine are being merciful to their less capable followers or the Nine are trying to save face by not wanting to show off a failure of their divine might..   Some divine casters claim failures are internalized others claim failure means nothing but wasted mana. Some theurgists have reported mild headaches or nausia after failed casting. Mild physical discomfort can happen from successful castings of divine magic if they use a lot of magic in a short time window.
