Ziven's Spear, the warship that never got to fight
Ziven's Spear is theKingdom of Fumaya only warship.
Fumaya is a landlocked nation far from the sea, but it has many lakes and rivers.
The biggest lake, the Lake of Fumaya, is geographic and economic center of the country. Ostensibly, Ziven's Spear is protecting the lake. The Lake of Fumaya is surrounded on all four sides by friendly territory, so Ziven's Spear has never been tested in battle.
The ship is armed and armored, but its main purpose is to rapidly disembark soldiers.
Ziven's Spear was commissioned by Ziven Linijka, the first King of Fumaya.
Unfortunately, the ship builder got a little carried away and built a much larger and grander ship than Ziven envisioned. The courtier in charge of the ship building project was dismissed from the royal court in disgrace for wasting money, but Ziven ended up with the ship anyway. Because of the great expense of the vessel, it was nicknamed "Ziven's Folley".
The ship ran a few drills to make sure that the ship could complete it's stated function. Yes, the ship is fully capable of rapidly disembarking soldiers as designed. Since there was no need to ferry soldiers rapidly across the lake, the ship became an expnsive floating decoration sitting in the harbor unused for well over half a century.
King Ziven the Third eventually inherited the ship and figured, "as long as we have the ship, we might as well maintain it properly" and issued a royal decree that the ship should be kept in good repair. No king that came after saw reason to overturn this decree.
As planks got rotted or worn, they were replaced. The ship is nearly four hundred years old. At this point there are very few original pieces of the ship left, but the ship's original design was unchanged. Various kings ran it through occasional military drills to make sure the ship still works okay.
The most recent previous king, Ziven the Sixth, better known as King Ziven the Merry, converted the ship from a warship into a party boat.
The current king. King Henryk the Third has opted to disassociate himself from his father's hedonistic proclivities. He has repurposed Ziven's Spear back to it's original configuration but then opted to use it as a passenger ferry for civilians because that is the most practical use he could think of it for it.
Propulsion
Ziven's Spear relies primarily on wind power sails, but it has ores for the soldiers on board to row if speed is needed.
The ship's hull holds a magical locus letting it be propelled magically for short bursts. Originally there were 20 charges in the locus, but now there are eight. Various kings wanted to try out the magical propulsion just to see what it looks like.
In theory, the locus can be recharged, but each charge costs about 100 drams of reagents (two month's gross pay for a common laborer) which is a lot for a feature on a ship that serves no strategic purpose.
Weapons & Armament
The ship was designed with two swiveling ballistae (now swiveling chairs). And pavise shield embankments to give cover to archers and mages.
These items were removed to reduce weight on the ship, but they could be reinstalled in a matter if hours if needed.
Does Ziven's Spear have to stay in the lake?
Lake of Fumaya connects to other lakes via rivers and canals. The Lake of Fumaya is the primary source water for the Blue River, and the Blue River flows all the way to the sea. A small boat can sail out of the Lake of Fumaya and ride the current all the way out to sea, and grain barges follow this route all the time, but Ziven's Spear is taller than grain barges and the ships bottom drags deeper. During the dry season, the water level is too low and Ziven's Spear risks getting stuck on the riverbed. During the rainy season, the water level rises too high and Ziven's Spear can't squeeze under the bridges. So the water level has to be exactly right for the Spear to sail the river. This could be helped by water manipulation spells, but it's still not easy. The Blue River connects the land of Fumaya and land of Swynfaredia. Currently, Fumaya and Swynfaredia are at war. In theory, Henryk could send the ship downstream to support his forces, but the ship is so unwieldy that Henryk believes deploying the ship in battle would just be handing the Swynfaredians a free war trophy.
