Kovenoth Palace Complex
The Duchy of Greater Kovenoth is the ancestral seat of power of House Kovenoth.
In all of Swynfaredia, it is second only to the Royal Palace in terms of size and grandeur though it's political importance has certainly seen better days.
The ducal palace is roughly eight centuries old, but it's still not done. Because every Duke or Duchess of Greater Kovenoth is expected to make a new contribution to the palace.
Purpose / Function
To serve as a practical headquarters and an abstract symbol of power for House Kovenoth.
Alterations
Each duke or duchess who inherited the palace is expected to improve upon it. House Kovenoth has fallen on harsh times financially for the last several generations.
During this harsh time, some owners of the ducal palace have opted for modest decor changes to meet the bare minimum of their obligations while others have made sacrifices or incurred debts in other aspects of the realm in order too finance lavish improvements.
Architecture
The palace is not one building but is actually a series of interconnected buildings, along with paved roads, artificial bodies of water, and public gardens.
Besides buildings by and for Kovenoths, the area houses a regional office of the Arcane Registry which the Registry pays a small yearly fee for the privilege. The Kovenoths were hoping to be able to use this for political leverage, but the Registry didn't take the bait.
The Palace Complex also boasts a very impressive Nonagon Plaza. Some of the Swynfaredian use their temple here as an administrative centers and others just keep it as a figurehead posting.
History
Given that House Kovenoth was founded by a future forward looking dragon named Kovenoth the Builder, it should be no surprise that the sons and daughters of House Kovenoth, both Squibs and sorcerers, often study architecture.
Most Swynfaredian architects are either members of House Kovenoth, or are connected to House Kovenoth via mentorship through lineages of wisdom. Studying the Kovenoth ducal palace is basically a history lesson of the architectural trends for all of Swynfaredia.
House Kovenoth has the dubius dishonor that for all three Swynfaredian Civil Wars, the majority of the House backed the losing side. It was only during the Third Swynfaredian Civil War that the battle actually extended to the Kovenoth palace grounds.
About a dozen sorcerers and hundreds of non-sorcerers were killed on or near the palace grounds. A lot of treasures were looted from the palace. Though the palace itself was not severely damaged and what damage that was inflicted on the structures was fixed relatively quickly after the war concluded.
