Necromancy

"Necromancy is a lot broader than common people thing. Peasants tend to fixate on creation of the undead, and even they misunderstand undead are only as dangerous as the person wielding it. Is a knife evil? The same knife that can chop up vegetables for soup can be used to murder someone.
Undead are very much the same. Undead can be used ease the lives of the living or to harm the living, depending on who is wielding the knife. A lot of neromancers refuse to study undead spells at all, and even then a necromancer can very powerful and useful.
Most arcane necromancy spells fit into four broad groups: Healing spells, pain spells, extrasensory spells, spells to command the restless dead, spells of undead command and creation.
There is some overlap. "Diagnosis" is an extrasensory spell and a healing spell. "Mastery of Pain" is a pain spell and a healing spell. Pain spells have a bad reputation because...well no one likes pain, but they are actually merciful. They let a necromancer incapacitate an opponent without causing permanent damage. Very few other schools of magic have spells that can do this.

Necromancy's deadliest spell, 'Necrotic Ray' is sort of an inversion of a healing spell. It has a bad reputation, but it's no more lethal than the scores of "Blast" spells Conjurers and everyone has a right to defend themselves."

"Necrotic Ray" is not our deadliest attack spell. Dallas conveniently didn't mention 'Touch of the Faceless'. Necrotic Ray inflicts wounds that are resistent to magical healing, but Touch of the Faceless leaves behind horrifying amorphous corpses that have a high chance of birthing an exogenic masterless undead.
Since the spell mimics the attack of the infamous Faceless, no one can write it off as 'just for self defense'. There is no way to act as an apologist for it.
Nor should a necromancer be an apologist. Only mewling weaklings offer apologies for what they do. One must use magic boldly or not at all. Sometimes 'not at all' is a reasonable strategy. If you are worried about a negative response to necromancers, just don't cast any spells around witnesses and don't dress like a stereotypical necromancer until you are in a position of strength."
