Countess Igraine ap Selwyth

Countess Igraine ap Selwyth (a.k.a. The Grandmother of Illusion)

Countess Igraine is the ruler of County of Emberhold.   Igraine is one of the most powerful sorceresses in House Selwyth that is not a necromancer. That in and of itself is not that unusual. Only a slim majority of Selwyths are necromancers, but Igraine is unique in that her branch of the Selwyth family tree hasn't produced a single necromancer in three generations. Going on four depending on how her grandchildren turn out.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Countess Igraine is a very gifted Illusionist, not just in terms of raw power but in the artistry of her creations.   When her mother, the previous Countess, was still alive and in good health, Igraine liked to follow the Swynfaredian theater circuit creating scenery and special effects. Even as countess, she loves to show off her illusion skill at every opportunity. She uses illusions to decorate her castle, makes lavish displays at Otectum Parties, and honor the Nine on holy days. On her birthday, she puts on a show for her peasant subjects.   She earned the honorific the Mother of Illusions and later the Grandmother of Illusions   As a ruler she is a shrewd administrator but is somewhat lacking in diplomacy. In her youth, she was a skilled swordswoman, though unsurprisingly she liked to use Combat Invisibility and other illusion spells to gain an edge.

Social

Family Ties

Igraine allowed Lady Raewen ap Selwyth to conduct morally dubious experiments on loas on her land at the behest of the Matriarch of House Selwyth, Colwyn ap Selwyth.     Allegedly, she accepted this arrangement with great reluctance and she butts heads with Lady Raewen often though Igraine built and maintained the illusion spells to hide Lady Raewen's illicit activities, so she is technically an accomplice in the loa scheme.

Social Aptitude

For a countess she is fairly shy and introverted for a countess. Some speculate that her skill with illusion is so she can distract and please others without actually having a deep conversation with them.
