The Star Fields is the collective afterlife of Scarterra. The Star Fields are set up very much like a giant sprawling nation, the The Nine Hells of Scarterra are much like large prisons within this giant nation. Non-damned souls can visit the Nine Hells if they want to, sort of like a prison visit, but there are few takers. Geography
The Fields of Deprivation are an empty wasteland of dust populated only by those souls Mera deemed worthy of damnation.
Ecosystem
Damned souls spend many centuries in the Desert of Deprivation, but no one spends an eternity there.
Sometimes souls pass on to nothingness when they are release, more often they are eventually paroled and given food and allowed to rejoin the proper society of the Star Fields.
Mera doesn't actually WANT to punish souls of the damned. She maintains the Fields of Deprivation partially out of sense of justice and partially to act as a deterent. Like with the other eight Hells, souls of the damned occasionally get to go on sabbaticals (under guard) to make Marley-Scrooge style visits to living people Mera wants to issue a warning to.
Localized Phenomena
Souls in the Scarterran afterlife do not require food or drink. They CAN eat and drink for pleasure if food or drink is avaiilable, but they don't need it to exist and they don't suffer from hunger or thirst.
Unless a soul is in the Fields of Deprivations. Souls in the Fields of Deprivation suffer from hunger and thirst, but since they are already dead, they cannot die. They can can only suffer.
Fauna & Flora
Mera is a gentle and forgiving soul, but she is protective of families and communities. The sorts of mortals to incur Mera's wrath are often casual bullies and/or those who willingly harm the defenseless, especially mothers and children.
Tourism
Non-damned visitors to the Fields of Deprivation only suffer mild discomfort and they are usually offered food immediately upon leaving, but even then the Fields of Deprivation probably has the fewest visitors of any of the Nine Hells.
