8. Gravity

"Dix! I can get the gravgens back but I need more power." Lo Qyun was head first and waist deep into an access panel and his legs were flailing about as he worked. He used some of the tools he hid in his many layers of clothing. Everything had pockets, pouches, or zippered sections.

"Well, grab some juice from the water system. They're offline now that the alert has been sounded. We must be ready for a boarding party and the gravgens will be crucial!"  Dixon was still working to get the engine back to full but he was exhausting his options quickly. "And if that doesn't work, use the power array from the com system."

The ship lurched with a resounding thud and then shuddered slightly. Lo cried out and Dixon steadied himself and glanced over towards him.

"That sounded like a rough docking." Dixon grumbled.

"I need a minute. I knocked my head hard."

The engineer slammed the panel in front of him shut. It was no use. He made his way over to the younger man and tugged him out from the tight work space. He looked him over and saw that the injury didn't draw blood so Lo should be okay.

"Here let me try. Go to the lockers and grab my laser rifle and the KT pistol too!" Lo's eyes were teared up with the pain but he followed the order. Dixon watched him for a moment before diving into the access. With a little improvisation he managed to connect a power conduit to the junction that powered the gravgens.

"Lo!" No response for a breath. Suddenly something grabbed his legs, or rather, his bulky pants. He and Lo shared some preferences.

"Here, Dix." Lo's deep voice was shaky.

"I'm going to try switching the gravgens on. Hold tight." Dixon clamped the connection firmly in place and tripped the manual valve for the power flow. A component near his head chirped and then he heard a beep from another.  His body fell to the floor as the gravity rose in a few seconds.

"Not bad! Eighty percent gravity will do nicely!"

Voices echoed from the corridor outside the engine room. Dixon grabbed the rifle from Lo immediately and hunkered down behind a low bulkhead.

"That's too quick to be a boarding party down here but be ready anyway." He told his junior in a hushed tone.

They both listened when a familiar voice called out, "Great job there Dix, but a little warning next time!"

"Jev!" Lo shot out from beside the engineer towards the door. The doc stepped into view with Tan who looked a little green. The cook set himself down at a workbench nearby while Lo embraced Jev warmly.

"What happened here?" Jev inspected Lo's head above his right ear peering through the youth's thick locks.

"He banged it when the Phoenix bucked her mount."

"Have you seen anyone else?" Lo asked.

"No. This was our first stop. Peter should be with the captain and Hoodie. Deeno was firing at them. I don't know where Eli and Red are."

"You've got weapons, good." Dixon observed. "There's nothing more we can do here. Let's get somewhere most defensible."

"They would have noticed the gravity coming back on." Jev speculated.

"Exactly. Let's go."
