County of Filipa
The County of Filipa is the relatively sparsely populated northern province of the Duchy of Zimoz.
Demographics
Roughly 90% human. Unsurprisingly, the majority of the humans Fumayan humans but there are a fair few who identify as Jórtoca first and Fumayan second. The majority of the humans have at least a little of both ethnicities in their blood.
The majority of the non-humans are gnomes. And most of the gnomes here are tangentally involved in raising reindeer.
The County of Filipa doesn't have a lot of half-elves, but they have proprotionally more than any other county in Fumaya and in their case most of them are actually Half wood elves and not half-satyrs like most of Fumaya's "half-elves".
Defences
The region is not very populous but being on near the frontier means there are a lot of things that go bump in the night. The local lords know how to make hay when the sun shines so they built up as many defensive structures as they could afford and each generation of rulers leaves the fortifications slightly better than what they inherited. While there are a lot of isolated farmsteads, no one is more than a few miles from a walled stockade or small castle of some kind that they can seek refuge in if need be.
A large percentage of the population are militia members or retired militia and most men and more than a few women can fire a bow or crossbow, and the locals are good reading the signs of nature to detect danger in advance.
Industry & Trade
Like in most of Fumaya, most of the locals make their living from farming. Due to the cold climate, farming is not as efficient here acre per acre but the County of Filipa has a lot of land and a fairly low population so farming families tend to have bigger farms.
Having a side hustle is not unusual for any farmer in Fumaya (or Scarterra as a whole), but this is especially common here. Most farming families have a few members who moonlight as fisherman, reagent foragers, hunters, reindeer herders, or shepherds.
The wool from Filipa is considered among the finest wools in all of Scarterra for maximizing warmth.
History
The First Duke of Zimoz, Zimoz the Archer was unfortunate in that he outlived a lot of his children. His plan was to give each of his three sons a county, but only one of them survived his father to inherit the ducal title.
Zimoz's less fortunate sons did give him grand children, but only daughters. Lord Telek Zimoz's daughters all got very prestigious marriages, especially Lady Zylina who eventually became Queen Zylina.
Lord Oles Zimoz only had one daughter, Lady Filipa Zimoz and she did not have any extremely prestigious suitors knocking on her door despite probably being grandpa's favorite.
So the Duke Zimoz arranged a marriage between her and one his favorite knights and the promoted that knight to count. The knight got to pick his family name, but the newly formed County was named "Filipa".
The County Filipa remained the northern frontier of Fumaya for a while with all the opportunities and problems that situation.
There was gradual expansion north of Filipa which eventually was formalized into the County of Polnoc. When that happened, the County of Filipa lost a little bit of land they had gradually annexed and they lost even more settlers who relocated to the new county and relations between Filipa and Polnoc remain a mixed bag.
Geography
A mix of rolling hills and plains with a mix of pastureland, woodlands, forests, and farmland. Trees are a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees leaning towards coniferous trees. As one moves east to west, the density of tree cover gradually increases. There are plenty of trees to the east, but those are part of the sovereign territory of Codenya.
Settled areas often have ring-like layers. Center ring, walled village. Next ring tilled farmlands. Next ring is pastureland. Next ring is tended woods and then beyond that wild forests.
Climate
Temperate leaning towards cold.
Natural Resources
Adequate farmland and fishing opportunities. Good pasture land and timberland. Decent reagents, especially in the Northwest Forest.
Accessible metal ores are next to nonexistant, but there are a few modest stone quarries that are worked in the summer which help build and maintain the regions walls and castles.
