red cloth and dye

Red dye comes in a wide variety of shades and variations. Bright shades of crimson are expensive and therefore high status, and duller shades are considered lower status with many levels in between.

Properties

Origin & Source

Most red cloth in Scarterra is a linen or wool that is dyed red externally, but it is due to elemental metaphysics, people and animals come in a wider variety of colors than their real Earth counterparts. This means wool in Scarterra comes in a huge variety of colors.   Naturally occurring red wool is considered very valuable because unlike red dye, it won't fade out after multiple washings. Vaguely reddish sheep are fairly commonplace, but bright red sheep are rare and very valuable. Both red and reddish sheep are most commonly seen in areas of Scarterra with a warm and dry climate.

Even dull red wool or pinkish wool has some value because it's easier to make a bright red garment using pink as a baseline than it is using gray or beige as a baseline.

History & Usage

Cultural Significance and Usage

On Earth, the idea that pink is a girl's color and blue is a boy's color is a relatively modern concept. Medieval people didn't commonly think of "pink" as a separate as a separate color, more commonly thinking of it as "light red".   In Scarterra, pink will not elicit a response saying "That's a girly color", more like "Oh, you couldn't afford the good red dye."   On Scarterra, red is generally considered a masculine color and blue is considered a feminine color. This is a guideline, not a rule. A woman is not going to create a scandal wearing red nor a man wearing blue.

Hallisan and Maylar don't have a lot in common but they are both considered very masculine and their theurgists and spirit minions manifest a red divine magic aura.   Korus has a loose tie to the color red as the color of blood and Korus embodies the harsh and visceral aspects of nature and not just the pretty aspects of nature though he is primarily associated with the color green.   Zarthus and Phidas have a loose tie to the color red via it's associations with revenge and ambition respectfully though they are both commonly associated with the color gray or silver.   The only goddess with much of a tie to the color red is Khemra but her tie to yellow and orange is greater. so red remains a culturally masculine color despite this exception.   Hallisan and Maylar both represent different aspects of war, but they are both gods of war, so red is considered a color of war. Red is commonly associated with martial prowess and strength in heraldry.
Even if they are not affiliated with Hallisan or Maylar, a lot of warriors choose to wear red clothes or red accessories. The Keepers primarily wear yellow and the Masks primarily wear gray but their holy warriors wear a lot of red as part of their uniforms.   Warriors, even high status warriors, usually wear the cheaper rusty shades of red rather than bright shades of red because they are likely to get their clothes damaged or dirtied in combat, and rusty red hides blood stains better.

Bright red clothes are intended more as an attention grabbing fashion statement than they are intended a symbol of marital prowess though officers sometimes wear bright red clothes (assuming they aren't worried about magical snipers).

Everyone likes sausage, no one likes to know how it's made. That sometimes applies to expensive clothing.   Duller shades of red usually come from plants and the brightest shades of red usually come from insects, which is more difficult and labor intensive to harvest, which is why bright reds are so expensive. It's helpful NOT to tell monied customers how their red clothing was made.   Red paints are a lot cheaper and easier to make than red clothing dye.
This applies to just about every color in Scarterra, but red more than most, so if a person wants to add color to a house or business on the cheap, red is a good eye catching option.

I'm really enjoying your articles on colors and clothing. Are there more coming?

From The River to The Ocean, a civilization grows up. Under them both lies The Deeps.

There are more coming, I'm sort of pumping the brakes on new articles after Worldember, so I can do some overdue editing on my existing articles (this article was pretty typo ridden before today), but I was and am planning to get through the whole crayon box. Some colors I have more to say about than others, but I am using real world medieval clothing dyes as the baseline, so stuff Earth medieval people thought was rare and fancy is generally going to be rare and fancy on Scarterra.   I plan to write more articles about Scarterran clothing and fashion in general because there seems to be an appetite for it.
