Red Streams feudal government

Red Streams is run under a basic feudal system. At the top is the Prince, below him are Thanes, below them are Champions (basically knights who favor fighting on foot). Chivalry and honor is very important to the nobles of Red Streams. They are very formal. The nobles take their vows to protect and serve the people very seriously. They are generous to the poor and downtrodden but they come across as arrogant when they do it.

Structure

Red Streams is run under a basic feudal system. At the top is the Prince, below him are Thane, below them are Champions, essentially they are knights who favor fighting on foot.   Chivalry and honor is very important to the nobles of Red Streams and it's not mere lip service, they treat their subjects fairly well and receive genuine loyalty in return.

Culture

Honor is big and the leadership are unusually formal for Borderlanders. The nobles take their vows to protect and serve the people very seriously. They are generous to the poor and downtrodden but they often come across as pompous and showy when they perform acts of charity.

Public Agenda

To safe guard the people of Red Streams and rule with honor and justice.

Assets

The realm has five castles, one fairly large castle where the ruler lives and four fairly small where thanes dwell. Beyond this, the realm has little in terms of manmade assets.   There is talk of creating a rank below Thanes, Grand Champions, to create a new level of nobility. The difference between a Champion and a hypothetical Grand Champion, but at this piont the realm is too cash strapped to build new castles, even modest castles.

History

Like most of the Border Baronies, the government rarely stays intact very long. The current feudal system of Red Streams has been in power roughly 40 years.   Before Red Streams was Red Streams, it was called Silver Valley and it was run by hereditary fae warlocks for almost a century.

Demography and Population

Red Streams has just under 70,000 residents, about 97% of them are humans.   The Prince's demense has about 20,000 people. Most of his four thane's lands have between 10,000 and 15,000 souls.

Military

The realm has roughly 100 elite Champions. Champions train with a variety of melee weapons, but they always train in a war bow.   The Thanes and Champions command roughly 1000 men-at-arms between them. About 5000 men are trained as a part-time militia.

Religion

The ruling nobles all accept Hallisan as their patron god, and the region houses a permanent temple of Khemra which has the ear of the nobles.   The nobles let the commoners worship who they want how they want as long as they don't break any laws. Most commoners loosely follow the Nonagon leaning towards Stewards of the Gift and Terrawan branch of the Tenders both of whom have a small permanent presence in the region.

Foreign Relations

Meckelorn sends envoys regularly and they encourage pilgrims to the Great Stone to travel through Red Streams because they are "humans of honor."   The Order of the Stone has a small chapter house here and this has indirectly given them some friendly contact with Stahlheimer dwarves who often pass through the area as pilgrims.   Their relations with their human neighbors are less stellar. The nobility of Red Streams believe the Uwcharedian government is sizing up their land for another expansion. Relationships with the Merchant Principality of Centrum and Barony of Bees are not good. The realms are not hostile, but their attempts to work out treaties or agreements ended up with the rulers of these realms all being offended by the others.   Redstreams and Centrum get are tied together by marriage but this has not helped the two realms cooperate as much as one would hope.

Agriculture & Industry

The economy relies on cereal and other food crops as well as herding sheep and goats.   The nobles also grow a few cash crops for export and this is their main, virtually only exports including wine, honey, beewax, and especially linens which are considered to be of great quality here.   Commoners occasionally export wool goods and traditional Borderlander handicrafts which the nobles allow to proceed untaxed though peasant families having food problems are allowed to pay their taxes with handicrafts in exchange for a reduction in crops that need to be yielded to their lords.   The generous tax policy makes the lords relatively popular with their subjects.   They also have a silver mine, but the rulers closed it and sealed it off because of a suspicious number of accidents.
