brown cloth and dye

For most real world pre-industrial Earth societies, and in Scarterra, brown clothes were commonly considered peasant clothes.   Symbolically, brown is color of the dirt. This doesn't mean brown clothes are considered the color of poop. It's not that low status. In an agrarian society, the majority work outside in the dirt and dust, so brown clothes is associated with the common, not the lowly.   The bottom tier of the clothing hierarchy is not brown cloth, it's undyed cloth. Which in the case of linen, cotton, hemp, beige is the natural state of most cloth.     Wool in Scarterra comes in a huge variety of colors, so it is more socially acceptable to wear undyed wool, especially if the wool in question is of one of the so-called rare colors. Very few Scarterran sheep are beige (which is good because such wool would not be worth much), but the plurality of them are brownish if not brown which is considered common though a rich brown wool would be valued above average.

Brown cloth was not as common as you probably think it was

It almost goes without saying that television and movies are not accurate portrayals of real world history. Whether it's a fictionalized retelling of historical events or a purely fictional setting that is loosely based on real world events, you are likely to see lots of peasants wearing brown clothes.

This is not historical accurate, but it feels historically accurate because we are so used to seeing things the wrong way. Part of this is a cinematic trick that predates film and goes back to the days of stage. If the extras have clothes that cause them to blend with the background, this makes the protagonists more clearly visible to the audience.   I'm not going to pretend that Scarterra is historically accurate, but in real Earth medieval history, it was not unusual for peasants to wear fairly bright colored clothing, and this applies to Scarterra.   The "Medieval Era" covers roughly 500 years and a huge land mass, so there was a lot of variation. In some times and places, there were laws limiting the number of bright colors commoners could buy in their clothes because some commoners were being mistaken for nobles. There wouldn't be a need to pass these laws if peasants weren't able to buy bright clothing relatively easily.   Medieval art is full of peasants wearing bright and cheerful clothing. Records of inventories and shops back up that tailors regularly sold bright colored clothing to peasants.

So in short, brown cloth is the most common color Scarterran peasants wear but it's far from the only color peasants wear. Once their basic needs are met and they have a little bit of extra money, the first luxury many peasant families buy is often bright colored clothing and once a peasant has a nice outfit, he or she is going to take good care of it to make it last as long as possible.   A lot of peasants made their own clothes, and if fancy dyes are more expensive, they save a lot of money making and dying their own clothes.

"I have a book full of alchemical recipes for making any dye color you can name. This includes various shades of brown. I've never had a paying customer ask me to make brown clothing dye. Once...once...a colleague of mine was hired to make mahogany brown clothing dye.   Natural sources of brown dye are pretty abundant in every corner of Scarterra. You can derive brown dye from certain types of soil, literally deriving dye from dirt. It almost sounds alchemical in concept except any farmer's wife can do it. Other brown dyes come from tree bark or various plant roots. The best dye often come from the fairly prestigious woods: walnut, chestnut, oak.
Silverwood dyes? That is certainly the most prestigious wood there is, but I can't imagine anyone wasting such a resource to make dye, and it'd probably come out as a dull gray."

"Whether or not brown is truly a 'peasant' color, our family shop sells more brown clothes to so-called fancy folk than you might think.   I don't know how it is down south near the coast, but in the interior of West Colassia, almost every Scarterran dresses in layers, so if you are going to be outside the outer layer might as well be brown. Even though it's a supposed low status color, many highborn will often buy a brown jacket or cloak to wear as the outer layer while traveling dusty roads.
Better to get your outer layer dusty than your fancy threads dusty. A nobleman can remove his traveling cloak and show off his nice clothes indoors after he's done traveling. Also, while traveling this lets a rich person not obviously look like a rich person, so they don't attract attention until they want to attract attention."

Cultural Significance and Usage

Brown clothes don't show dust and dirt, so brown cloth makes for practical outdoor work clothes.   Brown clothes often figuratively or literally blend into the background, so many adventurers, criminals, or simple introverts favor brown clothing to avoid attention.
Each of the the Nine are associated with certain bright colors that show up in priestly vestments and temple decor. The Cult of the Compact is suppose to worship all nine of the Nine equally without bias, so they usually avoid wearing colors associated with one of the Nine. Compact priests and priestesses usually predominantly wear brown or tan clothing both in their day-to-day wear and their formal vestments.   Brown also conveys modesty, which fits with the image most of the Cult of the Compact strives to present. Various non-priests will sometimes don brown clothes of days of fasting or penance.

Shrines and temples designed to be multipurpose sites of worship rather than being dedicated to one god or goddess tend to be brown. Brown plain temples can can be hung with colored banners or tapestries that are switched out frequently to offer different members of the Nine as circumstances dictate.   Along similar lines, Priests and priestess of the Cult of the Cult of the Compact often wear brightly colored collars, sashes, scarves or belt for to honor specific gods or goddesses on specific holy days. So they often wear mostly brown clothes with a small splash of color.

"Brown cloth is more varied than I ever expected. Just as soil comes in many shades of brown, brown cloth comes in many shades. In general, deep rich browns are considered higher status and more respectable than 'dusty' shades of brown. Garments with deeper, darker shades of brown are also more expensive and time consuming to make, so this sometimes upgrades darker and deeper shades of brown from 'low status' to 'mid status'."   -Tanoa, gnome tailor's wife
