Royal Chancellor of Fumaya
The Royal Chancellor of Fumaya is one of the most prestigious and important court positions in the Kingdom of Fumaya.
The Chancellor is the king's righ hand when it comes to all manners of diplomacy, both with his vassals and with foreign nations.
Qualifications
The Chancellor needs to be an expert on all things relating to Fumayan politics. That means he or needs to be able to recognize all the nuances of Fumayan heraldry and have a good working memory for who is sitting on what position, who is heir to what position, which Houses are feuding, etc.
While it is impossible for one person to keep abreast of all Scarterran politics, the Chancellor is expected to be fluent in the political affairs of foreign nations, especially Kingdom of Swynfaredia which is the largest and most problematic of Fumaya's immediate neighbors.
The Chancellor also needs to be a keen negotiator because he or she will handle a lot of preliminary negotiations before they make it to the king.
Requirements
The Royal Chancellor of Fumaya may be male or female. Potential Chancellors must be of noble birth.
Most of Fumaya's Chancellors have arisen out of the lower tiers of Fumaya's nobility. If one isn't born into a prestigious position and one is not interested in pursuing a martial career, this is the highest position an ambitious political climber can aspire to.
Appointment
The king appoints the Royal Chancellor. Nothing beyond this, if the King says you're the Chancellor, than you are the Chancellor. This doesn't require ceremony. Chancellors can be fired without ceremony too.
Responsibilities
The Chancellor is expected to keep abreast of all political events that may impact Fumaya and to provide sage advice on politics to the king.
In most cases, ambassadors and high level dignitaries seeking to negotiate deals with the king have to reach some level of preliminary agreement with the Chancellor before their proposal is brought up to the king.
These negotiations normally include noble houses and occasional representatives from Fumaya's Nonagon.
The Chancellor does not normally have to deal with guild representatives or other commoners, even powerful or wealthy commoners. That's the purview of other advisors.
Benefits
The Chancellor gets paid well, or as least as well any courier in Fumaya is paid. He or she gets fine lodging and a seat of honor at the royal table.
The Royal Chancellor can deputize junior Chancellors as often as she wants. In theory the king can veto or force such apppointments but this is rare. It's considered disrespectful for the king to do so, and most Fumayan kings are not micromanagers. King Henryk Linijka the Third avoids micromanaging because he trusts his advisors and grants them autonomy. His father, King Ziven the Merry avoided micromanaging because trivial matters of state bored him.
Accoutrements & Equipment
The Chancellor's main badge of office is the Royal Seal of Fumaya. Technically it belongs to the king, but the Chancellor is usually the person carrying it. This bears a lot of symbolic weight.
The Chancellor also traditionally wears a purple hat. Which doesn't sound like a big deal, but purple dye is very expensive, so wearing anything purple is a mark of high status.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The Chancellor serves "at the pleasure of the King" meaning that the king can dismiss or replace the Chancellor at any time without violating a royal charter or causing a scandal.
That said, most kings try to keep their Chancellors long-term if possible.
