Elves versus satyrs family terms of endearment
Many species other than elves speak Elven in Scarterra as their native language.
This is because elves ruled the world during the the Second Age and a lot of species that debuted in the Second Age were either forced to adopt the Elven language or they found it expedient to do so.
But non-elves have their dialects and variants of the elven language.
Scarterran satyrs are were originally an elf sub-species , so it's no surpise many learn Elven as their native tongue.
Scarterran elves have Inborn language vocabulary. Of the roughly 40,000 recognized elven words, 1000 of them are inborn and 39,000 are taught. For elves themselves, the 1000 inborn words don't vary at all.
Just in modern English, "Mother" has many variants. "Mom", "Mommy", "Mama", "ma" is just the tip of the ice berg for variants. Scarterran elves don't have this. Elves use "naneth" from babyhood to adulthood. To an outsider, this appears to be painfully formal because even small children essentially say "Mother" all the time, but it's not informal to elves because it's driven by instinct so the formal term sounds intimate to their ears based on inflection and tone rather than syntax.
Hypothetically, if an elf infant is raised by humans, it's going to instinctively call the first female caregiver it bounds with "Naneth" whether or not it's their biological mother. If the baby is taught a non-elven, it might eventually call her "Mama" or "Mom" or something else but it's going to start out calling her "Naneth".
Scarterran satyrs commonly learn Elven as their first language, but the language is not inborn, it must be taught. Satyr kids (and adults) commonly say "Nannee" "Nan-ee" "Neth-Neth" "Na-Na" or any number of variants of "Naneth".
It's not just for "mother". The Elven words for "father", "uncle", "brother", "sister", "uncle", "aunt", "cousin", "grandmother", "grandfather", "cousin" are inborn to elves. That means Scarterran elves use the same words for these relationships across time and geography.
Elves just say "ardarchon" for uncle, but satyrs could say "ardarchon najak" for "uncle goat" or more commonly a nickname or shortening it to "ardajak" or "Arja." or any number of cute variants.
Elven speaking speaking satyrs use the term "Emerah" to refer to "everyone I care about" or "my herd" encompassing blood and found family not counting blood relatives who are unknown or disliked.
As more and satyr subcultures stop teaching their young Elven as a first language and are switching to Common as their first language, many satyrs stick with Elven-derivative words for family terms of endearment.
Satyr culture commonly believes "It takes a herd to raise a kid". Most satyrs grow up with a great many "aunt goats" and "uncle goats" that may or may not actually be related by blood.
Satyrs often value found family equal to or even more than blood family. Cynics say that this is because satyrs are never 100% sure who the father is, but even monogamous satyr individuals and satyr subculture tend to incorporate a wide herd of extended family.
If it's necessary to distinguish between honorary family members and blood family memories, satyrs might attach the suffix "yaren" to blood relatives" and "najak" to found family.
