Common

Originally, all Scarterran humans spoke a common language, now frequently referred to as Common.   As the first humans spread to the far corners of Scarterra, the different human groups diverged culturally. And eventually they diverged linguistically as well.   Essentially, the farther a Scarterran travels away from the place of his or her birth, the weirder the local humans' accents will sound until eventually the traveler can no longer understand the locals at all.   In general, while regional accents are very distinct, a Scarterran Common speaker has little problem understanding other Common speakers on his or her home continent, but will have extreme difficulties communicating with foreign speakers if he or she travels overseas despite in theory having a common language.   There are five widely recognized linguistic families of Common: West Colassian Common, East Colassian Common, Penarchian Common, Umeran Common, and so called Equatorial Common which stretches across the various smaller islands and the very large Island of Khemarok.   By the 18th century of the Feudal Era, for all intents and purposes, these "linguistic families" represent separate languages.   Scarterran stories set in the Red Era, regional differences are much smaller so the linguistic families represent separate dialects more than separate languages because the human race has had less time to diverge linguistically.
