House Carbow
House Carbow is an oddity among ennobled gnomes, Fumayan gnomes, and most gnomes in general.
House Carbow bases their prosperity and culture on reindeer. Their economy depends on herding reindeer and the backbone of their military is their reindeer cavalry. The fact that they prioritize miiltary training at all is a bit unusual for gnomes.
Structure
House Carbow, like many gnome leaders, believe the government that governs best, governs least.
They will see to the basic needs of their peasants, but they try to stay out of their way as much as possible. They expect their own lieges to do likewise, and their lieges are generally okay with this as the Carbow Barons pay their taxes on time and doesn't make waves.
Culture
Their heraldric colors are green and white with a dash of yellow and unsurprisingly features a reindeer buck.
They want to symbol peacefulness, generosity, and loyalty but not passivity.
The House carefully balances wanting to maintain community ties while still being self-reliant.
There are not enough ennobled Fumayan gnome famiiles for any of them to exclusively marry with other ennobled gnomes, but House Carbow is even more prone to marry commoners into the house than the other houses are, preferring to marry the sons and daughters of lowborn reindeer herders and riders of great skill.
Public Agenda
To serve the Fumayan crown and their own subjects.
Assets
The main asset of House Carbow is owning many head of reindeer and land to graze them in.
History
In recognition for a long lifetime of service to the Kingdom of Fumaya, Sir Schnocneg the Reindeer Knight was made into a Baron practically on his death bed. He only got to be Baron for about six months.
There was a lot of political disagreements that slowed down Schnocneg receiving his title, one of them was that Sir Schnocneg did not want his legacy to be "House Schnocneg" because he wanted his other namesake, the Schnocneg Regiment to not be seen as an extension of the nobility but a meritocratic unit for any qualified gnome regardless of background. Eventually, "House Carbow" was decided on.
Territories
All of House Carbows lands are in northern region of Fumaya, aka "the ankle".
The family control six baronies altogether, three in Duchy of Zimoz (two in County of Filipa), two in County of Polnoc, and their newest land grant is in the Duchy of Frymar.
Their first and most important holding is the Barony of the Schnocneg Plains in the County of Filipa.
While these baronies are all run by gnomes and have a majority population of gnomes in them, the Carbow lords ultimately bend the knee to human counts and dukes above them though their lords give them a lot of autonomy to run their baronies as they see fit.
Military
Most ennobled gnomes that are part of human feudalistic structures are not required to participate in their liege's military retinues and instead opt to pay an extra tax, so they can rely on allied human soldiers for their protection.
House Carbow is an exception. THeir sons are required to train in military extensively, equivalent ot a human lords knight's training. Their daughters are required to learn the basics of self-defense and they can take full military training with their brothers.
House Carbow makes greater demands of their gnomish commoners to also serve in the military but gnomes that serve their lords are well trained, well equipped, and well paid.
House Carbow is most famous for the reindeer cavalry of the Schnocneg Regiment but they have strong levies of spearmen and crossbowmen as well stealth-trained skirmishing fighting gnomes.
If a Fumayan gnome from outside Carbow lands breaks the mold and decides he or she would like to be a warrior, than that gnome is likely to seek an instructor from House Carbow.
Religion
Agriculture & Industry
House Carbow has jurisdiction over of a fair few farms and lumber mills but their economy is based on herding reindeer.
Besides providing meat, milk, and reindeer cheese, they are valuable as a means of transportation.
Gnomish reindeer cavalry is surprisingly effective, at least when coordinated with human infantry. But before they let young gnomes train with weapons, they are expected to become great riders. Apprentice reindeer cavalry run messages up and down the length of Fumaya which is not only good training, but makes a decent secondary stream of income for House Carbow.
